I, too, saw the salaries of the MTV’s “Teen Mom” cast that were leaked in “Life and Style” magazine. If you didn’t hear or read about it, they make $60,000-$65,000 a season. To me, that only explains why Gary was able to drive off a minivan as he did in so many episodes, but it doesn’t explain why Amber didn’t have crib sheets or diapers for Leah, or even why Farrah kept fussing over the decision to rent her parent’s rental house vs. just getting a better place nearby, or why she worked extra hours to pay off that $3,000 debt from one of those classic Nigerian money wiring scams on Craiglist. I could go on and on.
I’m not alone in my think nor my fascination with that particular cast. Stephanie Sylverne wrote an article for The Huffington Post called “Why We Really Care About ‘Teen Mom’.” She delves deep into our psyche about our need for explanations when it comes to salary, what this show represents as a reflection of society, classic Dr. Drew-isms, and even talks to a young woman who decided not to continue onto the season 2 taping of “16 and Pregnant.” It’s definitely a good read.
