If you’re truly into roots, rock, reggae the ones at the top of their game have been Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, and Gregory Isaacs. On October 25, 2010 the “Cool Ruler” Gregory Isaacs died of lung cancer at the tender age of 59. He had been battling the big “C” for a year before his death. A native of Jamaica, he also made a home in London. Through his life, like many artists, he struggled with drugs and the law, but somehow he managed to deliver some wonderful music in the midst of it all.
I chose “Night Nurse” from Gregory’s musical collection mainly because it was his first big crossover hit from the album with the same name as the title released in 1982. For me, it’s a song I recall growing and falls under what I affectionately term “Daddy Music” since my father, of West Indian descent, is a music aficionado especially when it comes to reggae and jazz.
