This week’s Throwback Friday is by special request from JB who thinks he owns this particular column on my blog. Every week, he goes through his iTunes picking out songs he likes and telling me that what I should use. When JB mentioned Ashford and Simpson, I was like “hell no,” but then I saw the video for “Solid” and I had a change of heart.
The husband and wife duo Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson were both singers and songwriters. “Solid” was released in 1984 and made it to #1 on the R&B charts and #12 on the pop charts. They also made quite a career for themselves writing and producing for other great artists under the Motown label such as Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, and Teddy Pendergrass (read here for bio).
While everyone was getting high on the hope Obama promised during his campaign for the presidency, a remake of “Solid” emerged called “Solid as Barack.” Here’s a link to Huffington Post where you can play the song “HuffPost Premiere: Solid as Barack.”
Without further ado, here’s this week’s Throwback Friday “Solid.” I love Ashford’s S-curl/relaxer he was rockin’ back then, lol.
