Thanks to all of you who joined me on Twitter in the smack talk as we watched the Grammys.  It made watching that much more fun.  I haven’t compared my picks to the actual winners list yet, but I know I shouldn’t be a betting gal.  Last night was Team Beyonce and Team Taylor Swift.  Beyonce broke the record for the most Grammys won by a female in, and Taylor…well, she writes her own music as if nobody else does.    Seriously, Taylor took home 4 Grammys including Album of the Year.  Kanye West, yet again, was in M.I.A. which we all can’t help but to attribute that to America’s 20 year old sweetheart, Taylor Swift.

Highlights

• Curse of Kanye was broken with “Run This Town” by Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kanye West won Best Rap Collabo AND Best Rap Song
  
• Stephen Colbert was funny enough to win Best Comedy Album but failed to bring the funny as one of the hosts
• Kings of Leon got their just recognition nabbing Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Group or Duo with “Use Somebody”
• My favorite performances were Pink and duet with Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli
• I continue to be disappointed to see Michael Jackson’s kids make appearances.  It’s exploitation.  I think MJ was very protective largely because he was robbed of his childhood.  I know we love some MJ, but let those kids grow up quietly and let MJ’s siblings speak on his behalf instead.
• Justin Bieber is growing on me.  He’s a tiny little cutie with some personality to boot.  So funny how he said “Beyonce” instead of “Bon Jovi.”

• The girl with the big hat was the guitarist from Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” tour.  She had a huge moment in the documentary.  Hmmm, wondering if you saw it.
  
• I’m with you on Rihanna. Outfit was wack.  She looked like could hurt me with those spikes in her shoulder pads.  Maybe it was a protective move in case someone tried to beat her in the car (i know… that was wrong… ha ha!)

Buck, let me guess that you love Taylor Swift?  I’m with you on Rihanna except it being for her upcoming album.  I’m also aching for Glee to come back on!  Glad to see it return to tv as well this week.  Jon Gosselin comment was random and could have saved you 20 seconds of air. Who cares about Jessica Simpson or Ashlee?  Why would you want to sing with her?  “Buck has girl hands!!!”  Do what you love forever!

On Kanye West and Taylor Swift…

Krysten’s take

Krysten: I felt so bad for Taylor Swift. I really did. Kanye, I mean he just doesn’t hold back for anybody. He kind of goes in full force. I mean it kind of was her moment and he kind of, I mean, he did ruin it but Beyonce patched it up. She gave Taylor her moment.

Ifelicious: Ya, I thought it was nice in the end. I’m still on the fence on whether or not it was all staged.

Krysten: I was trying to figure out that myself, but I just don’t think they would stage something like that, you know?

Mikey P’s take

Mikey P: Let’s put it this way, if Kanye West tried to bum rush me when I was getting my first award, I would have drop kicked him in the face. There is no question about it. He would not have made it onto the stage. That midget would not have made it past b_Roc let alone me. Kanye West stands four inches shorter than Taylor Swift so honestly Taylor Swift, she could’ve stood a fighting chance.

Ifelicious: Ya, I think she was just in shock.

Mikey P: It was so immature. I lost a lot of respect for Kanye West because of that. In the end, it was great because Beyonce just kind of like threw it back in Kanye’s face…by bringing [Taylor Swift] back onstage.

Favorite VMA Performance…

Krysten’s favorite

Krysten:  My favorite by far, I mean, I’m like a fan of Lady Gaga.  I love her.  She’s unusual.  She’s unique.  She’s just awesome.  I love her.

Ifelicious:  I was surprised to see how strong of a fan base she has.

Krysten:  I read an article on her.  Like when she first came out I wasn’t feeling her that much.  She was ok.  She had a strong voice but…from reading this article, I was just blown away.  She’s so articulate.  She knows what she’s doing.  She knows exactly what she wants.  She knows exactly where she wants to go, and I love that.

Mikey P’s favorite

Mikey P: I think my favorite performance last night was probably Pink because any person that can do those acrobatics and still sing at the same time. She was singing live, and that was impressive. That’s all I can say about that.

Ifelicious: Ya, I was like somebody needs to send that tape over to Britney and be like, “Guess what? When you go on tour, I would like to see you sing.”

Mikey P didn’t really respond to that, but I put it out there anyway. Britney, take note!!!

Mikey P: Jay Z’s performance was monumental as well. I was impressed by his entrance because I like the whole camera following him from behind…I think Alicia Keys stole the show from him at the end, and Lil Mama walking on stage was just retarded.

I don’t know why I love Buck Hollywood, but he cracks me up.  Watch his review of the 2009 MTV VMAs that’s 6 minutes or so but if you put him in slow motion it would probably go for 60 minutes.  LOL

Who else like me bought the hype that MTV was going to really do it up with a tribute to Michael Jackson? I was expecting to see more than Madonna’s speech and a short performance featuring Janet Jackson, however wonderful they were.  I thought MTV would perhaps come up with an award to present to the family, maybe do some video footage of MJ at the VMAs through the years, intertwine MJ info for the presenters to share, I don’t know…just something more than what they did.  I think many of us felt they would certainly upstage BET’s tribute at their awards but I’m not sure it was mission accomplished for MTV in that regard.

Here’s Janet’s performance as a virtual duet with Michael Jackson for the song “Scream.”  I was so happy to see her get up onstage.  That was probably the only moment that I kind of felt a little choked up as I thought about how close they were and how it must feel to lose your brother.

Summary of MJ tribute

So the part of the night that seemed to even overshadow Michael Jackson’s tribute, was Kanye and his antics as he got up onstage to protest Taylor Swift’s win for Best Female Video over Beyonce. I’m going with the moment was staged, but then again I’m not sure Beyonce and Taylor Swift would agree to pull off some crazy antics like that. Hate me if you wish, but Kanye didn’t bother me. This is what he does. It is annoying and disrespectful and, yes, someone should muzzle him. The ugly truth is that it gets ratings and Kanye knows that. People love controversy and I feel by joining in the bad mouthing, I’m giving him what he wanted. So, I’ll just roll my eyes at Kanye and hope he pulls it together before he ends his career. And, no, I don’t think this even compares to Chris Brown as some people starting to tweet last night. Totally different ballpark.

The part that makes me wonder if this was a bit staged was how rehearsed Beyonce sounded when she took the stage for Video of the Year and called for Taylor Swift who so happened to be backstage. In my mind, there had to be some coordination going on at least at this point.  It was a classy move for Beyonce, staged or not.

It was nice not to see Britney this year live at the VMAs.  Instead we got some bizarr-o-world performance from Lady Gaga.  I saw folks tweeting that Lady Gaga is a genius.  I don’t think so.  She’s an out there artist, testing boundaries, but by no means a genius.  I mean how many words are actually in that song “Poker Face”?  And what was up with all those costume changes with various crap covering her face?  Just plain odd as far as I’m concerned.  I just wanted to hand her a Tampax and an Advil with all that fake blood (ya, i said it!) pouring out of her.

Here are some highlights that I found online.

As for everything else, I was actually bored.  I found myself getting sleeping about halfway in.  It was a good awards show, but not one of MTV’s best.  Jigga’s performance was cool (loved seeing Alicia Keys onstage…been a little bit since I’ve seen her out and about) and so was Beyonce’s.  It was nice to Eminem again, although people said he looked a little off, but that’s what a drug addiction can do long term, even though he’s allegedly sober now.  I just think he was nervous.
