Teen Choice Awards 2010: And the winners are… plus Ifelicious commentary

This year’s Teen Choice Awards was taped on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, CA and aired on FOX Monday, August 9 at 8:00 PM EST/7:00 PM CST. This year’s awards show was hosted by pop singer Katy Perry and the fellas from the “Glee” cast- Kevin McHale (“Artie Abrams”), Cory Monteith (“Finn Hundson”), Mark Salling (“Puck”), and Chris Colfer (“Kurt Hummel”). YouTube sensation Michael Buckley of the popular web series “What The Buck Show” was chosen to host the live U-stream webcast of the red carpet along with Taryn Southern.

Winners are chosen by teens ages 13 to 19. This year over 85 million votes were cast. The categories include: movies, television, sports, music, and other. Popular this year was the Twilight series, “The Vampire Diaries,” Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Eminem, and Selena Gomez. Yes, Lady Gaga was the pick for Female Artist and Summer Music Star, but none of her songs won in the music category which makes me wonder about her staying power.

In my mind, the sports, fashion and beauty, and other categories could be left out of the awards. Sports just seems out of place. Fashion and Beauty as well as Other honor people that are likely already awarded in other categories for similar appeal…but that’s just me. I was surprised to see David Archuleta‘s name pop up in the Other category for Choice American Idol Album.

Strictly for the Gleeks: Latest news on Glee season 2 and more

We already know that “Glee” has been nominated for whopping 19 Primetime Emmy Awards this year, and there will a Britney Spears episode in Season 2. However, I’ve been scrubbing the internet and my entertainment magazines for more, more, more news about “Glee.” See below:

Season 2 of “Glee” will air Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 8:00 PM EST/PST on FOX. In February 2010, “Glee” began a nationwide casting call to fill 3 new roles for the show in Season 2. So far, FOX has been tight-lipped about the winners, although the show has already begun filming (as of July). I can tell you that the roles that they were hoping to fill were:

Rachel’s rival
Kurt’s love interest
R&B male counterpart to Mercedes

As soon as I hear the news about casting call winners, I’ll be sure to share them with you. Meanwhile, international pop star Charice Pempengco will join the cast as a foreign exchange student who gives Rachel and vocal run for her money. Season 2 will end with New Directions and nationals in New York although there is no confirmation that the “Glee” vocal tribe will actually make it to the national level of competition. UPDATE 7/26/2010- MTV UK learned at Comic Con that there with be a “Rocky Horror Picture Show” episode. I can’t wait to see that!

Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) has been busy as well. Entertainment Weekly reports that there will be an autobiography released about the character in the Fall. Jane Lynch, who turned 50 on July 14, went to get measurements and photos decked out in quintessential Sue Sylvester gear for a wax sculpture of the character that will be unveiled in wax at Madame Tussaud’s museum in Hollywood on August 4, 2010.

Still can’t get enough? Save that money you earned from mowing lawns all summer, and be prepared to throw down $69.99 on September 14, 2010 when “GLEE: The Complete First Season” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD. The video is packed with extras included never before seen footage and my personal favorite…karaoke!!! They’re even offering a a $10 “Glee-bate” to those who purchased Season 1: Volume 1. The magic of “Glee” will live on Oxygen. The network has picked up “Glee” for syndication and will also air a similarly themed reality TV show (see article in Reality Blurred). Reruns will begin airing on Oxygen in 2013 (according to EW, however, i’ve seen some reports stating Jan 2011 for syndication), and the yet to be named reality show will be hits Oxygen’s airwaves in June 2011.

Glee to become Little Brown Books series, clothing and accessory line as well

NEW YORK, June 10, 2010 (via Associated Press, author Hillel Italie) — Little Brown Books for Young Readers announced Wednesday that five authorized books based on the hit Fox series will be coming out, starting in August with the prequel novel, “The Beginning.”

The “Glee” releases will be a collaboration between Little Brown and the creative team behind the dramatic comedy about a high school glee club. Among the stars of “Glee” are Matthew Morrison as glee club director, Jane Lynch as cheerleading squad coach and Lea Michele as the singing standout.

“The Beginning” will come out in time for the premiere of the show’s second season.

MTV also reports…

Books aren’t the only “Glee”-inspired merchandise headed down the pike to fans. The Los Angeles Times reports that a “Glee” clothing line will hit Macy’s department stores just in time for back-to-school shopping. In addition, New Directions wannabes will also be able to pick up “Glee” accessories at teen trinket haven Claire’s by the fall.

Cast of GLEE at SAG Awards 2010

It’s not surprising that FOX has already given “Glee” the thumbs up on a season 2. It has already garnered several awards such as the SAG Award for Best Comedy Series Ensemble, a Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Series, and Dorian Awards for TV Musical Comedy of the Year and Jane Lynch (plays Sue Sylvester) also took home TV Performance of the Year: Musical or Comedy, and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Comedy. These are just awards given in the past couple of weeks. In addition, the Glee volume 1 and volume 2 soundtracks both went Gold.

The second season comes with a little twist. Fans will be able to vie for a spot on the show. According to the press release from FOX:

Building upon the show’s incredibly supportive community of GLEEks and with the hope of bringing fans even closer to the series, auditions will be open to amateur individuals as well as professionals between the ages of 16-26, and all hopefuls will be able to submit auditions online. Additional details to be announced soon, please check www.fox.com/glee for updates.

This unique casting search and process will be chronicled in a multi-part special that will air leading up to the premiere of the series’ second season in fall 2010 on FOX, and the new cast members will be revealed in the premiere episode…

…ALL the roles will be chosen from the video audition process, which is exciting and unprecedented. We want to be the first interactive musical comedy on television, and the search is ON.

According to the Glee official website, online auditions for 3 roles will begin in February 2010, but make sure to keep checking www.fox.com/glee/audition/ for the latest.
