You got big dreams… you want fame… well, fame costs and right here’s where you start paying… in sweat…
- Debbie Allen as Lydia Grant on the hit tv series “Fame”
Blame it on my family…
Yep, I grew up the oldest of 5 which meant you had to stand out to get your share of attention. It also means that I have become pretty stingy in my old age since nothing in the house could ever be yours alone.
Creative from birth…
I’m sure a high resolution sonogram would have shown me making faces back at the OB/GYN. My life has been a collection of experiences that I would never trade for the world. I have overachiever tendencies and have aspired to be everything from a circus clown to a logistics engineer when I grow up. When it came to writing, it was something that many saw as a gift over the years but something I took for granted. I just love writing, especially creative writing.
When I was 7 years old, I wrote a short story called “The Sad Dragon” about a dragon that could not blow fire. My parents and others took notice of that story and helped me get it published in Ebony, Jr. It was a great experience that even afforded me the chance to meet the late Alex Hailey who autographed my “book” (school project for our short story included binding it). Just 3 years later, at the age of 10, I wrote to the ABC Saturday morning children’s show from the 80s called “Kidsworld” about my traveling exhibition jump rope team, the Kangaroo Kids. They liked my pitch and flew out to my hometown of Columbia, Maryland to cover the story. It was one of those shows where the people who wrote the story then became reporters, giving me my first on camera interview. Outside of those moments, I’ve always kept diaries as a way to jot down my thoughts.
Other ingredients in the makings of me…
I’ve always been a peacemaker and a bit of an activist. It served me well when taking on leadership roles throughout life. Quick to speak my mind, no matter the audience, I’ve probably landed myself in as much hot water as I have received praise. It’s kind of par for the course when you’re a soldier for justice.
So how’d I end up an engineer? I was generally stronger at math and science than English. I probably still prefer to toy with equations over writing although the tides are adjusting a bit these days. Throw in some geeky moments like competing nationally and internationally in science fairs, and all of the adult nods were pointing me in the direction of something technical. Creative pursuits always fell a distance third with soccer probably being my second love.
I’m A Big Kid Now…
Now, I’m switching things around. After focusing much of my professional life in engineering and technology, I’ve found my heart is fonder of writing. Here I go, tossing my BS in Civil Engineering and Master’s in Integrated Manufacturing Systems Engineering (Business Admin minor) aside for a new focus. Yes, folks, I’ve jumped on the follow your passion bandwagon after endless cycles of resorting to my familiar technical career path with wanting to do something more creative and personally fulfilling.
Today…
After about a year of starting a few blogs and an inner struggle with working within the confines of Corporate America versus the successes I was starting to see when I started writing, I finally said good bye from what I believe to be my last corporate stint. This all came about in mid-January 2009, and so far I haven’t looked back nor have I needed to look back. I’ve had my own gig before and I enjoy the freedom I have to manage my work life. I think anyone with the entrepreneur bug has a tough time trying to return to the structure of corporate.
What just started as this casual blogging experience has put me in touch with so many amazing opportunities and people so far. I’m still honing my craft and jumping on every opportunity that I have the bandwidth to take on. So far, conducting and posting interviews is my favorite project and the most time consuming. An avid traveler, armchair psychologist, and innately curious I am fascinated by the broad spectrum of people out there and helping to bring their stories to life by showcasing them on my blogs.
What’s in this blog…
Lately, I’ve been describing this blog as a boutique for those with ecclectic taste. If you don’t like a post, just scroll down and try another and you’ll probably find something that suits you. I am an 80s pop kid who grew up on MTV and loves it to this day. Many of my posts poke fun and relish in my MTV habit. I also love the arts in general and working to develop a portfolio of interviews covering greats, known and unknown, in music, film, and fashion. I dream of the moment when I’m out there on the red carpet interviewing artists or with my own radio talk show or sitting on Oprah’s Friday chat circles. I’m also very inclusive by nature and will post some topics related to the LGBT community in order to facilitate a dialog and break down some barriers. To top it off, you’ll find a little feminist and activist flare to some posts and a few things about local happenings and you’ve got this blog Ifelicious Thoughts.
So what! I’m still a blog star…
So, I’m in a bit of a pickle now that maybe some of you who read this can help me out. I love what I do, but I’m not making a penny from it…yet. My dream job will allow me to marry my love of writing with my love of the entertainment industry. Not to be forgotten is an opportunity to use my talents for good and not evil.
If you love what you read, let me know. If you have an idea, let me know. The way we interact and are entertained as people is ever changing and it would be silly to box myself in.
Shout out to my Guyanese readers and the rest of the Caribbean!!!
