New single from Diggy Simmons “Set Me Free” (free mp3 download)

The feedback on Diggy Simmons so far from the hip hop scene has been spectacular.  On December 2, 2009, Diggy released his first EP “The First Flight” (see my post “Diggy Simmons drops ‘The First Flight’ mixtape [download link]“) leading with the single “Point to Prove.”  His father Rev Run (Joseph Simmons) and uncle Russell Simmons first made a name for themselves as the rap group Run DMC. and are now both successful entrepreneurs in their own right. While his brother Russell Simmons helped found Def Jam.  Not to mention Diggy’s mom Justine Simmons who was also a rapper in the group the Fly Five and now with her own jewelry line Brown Sugar (www.simmonsjewelryco.com/brownsugar).  In short, it’s a given that Diggy Simmons has some big shoes to fill…and he’s doing it well.

The single “Set Me Free” produced by Snake Eyes has Diggy rhyming over an old school RnB track (I tried to research if it was sampled and by what artist.  Let me know if you know) bringing a fresh blend of old meet new.  I have to remind myself that Diggy is only 14 years old.  As with some of his singles on “The First Flight” mixtape, “Set Me Free” Diggy is letting us know that he’s making his own way in the world despite being born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Testify!  I’m a believer, Diggy!  Keep doing your thing!

FYI….Your story above is incorrect. You said, “His father Rev Run (Joseph Simmons) and uncle Russell Simmons first made a name for themselves as the rap group Run DMC and are now both successful entrepreneurs in their own right.” RUN-DMC was created by Rev. Run (Joseph Simmons), Darryl McDaniels (DMC) and the late Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay). Russell Simmons was the co-founder of DEF JAM with Rick Ruben. Let’s keep the history correct for those to follow.

  2. @FiveVenom- Good catch! That was a serious brain fart on my part when I wrote this that I didn’t notice. Glad to know someone is checking up on me. 😉
