Starbucks in Short North on Short List to be closed

2008 July 21

This is for my local peeps; however, since this Starbucks closings news, in general, is not unique to Columbus, OH, feel free to read along and maybe even drop a comment on how you’re feeling about it.

If none of the above work for you, at least take a minute to jam to Yung Joc’s song “Coffee Shop” (one of my jammy jams!).

When, I first started a blog using Google’s blogspot (very short lived) I wrote an entry about how the local coffee shop in the Short North at the corner of Buttles and High called A Coffee Table seemed to coincidentally close down only months after Starbucks opened a few blocks down on High Street. I’m sure someone out here knows the real reason, but I attributed it to the Starbucks effect. It was also a sign of more commercialization of an area whose claim to fame was uniqueness. There are plenty of art studios, boutiques, and local mom and pop shops that I, and other area residents enjoy. Yes, there are a few chains sprinkled throughout, but they were in the minority.

A Coffee Table- SoNo

While A Coffee Table seemed to struggle business-wise, at least based on my stop-throughs and walk-bys when it never seemed to be jam packed, I feel that Starbucks opening on the cap (end of Short North area) milked the last bit of hope A Coffee Table had to thrive.

Now, Starbucks, in an effort to eliminate less profitable locations, will be closing its doors in the Short North barely a year (if that) since it opened. So where will the hip coffee junkies flock? I know there’s A Cup of Joe basically across the street, but I always like the idea of the bohemian local coffee shop. A Coffee Table was also dog friendly and had treats for man’s best friend.

I am not a coffee drinker, but I love the smell and enjoy the scene. Plus, they do have teas and hot choco which are things that I do drink.

Oh what will us tree huggin’, free lovin’, guitar playin’, sandal wearin’ soles flock now?

Here are some articles I found online about Starbucks in general and specifically those in the Columbus, OH area that might be worth a gander.

Coffee Table had been struggling for a long time. The Starbucks is hardly at fault for that.

I don’t drink coffee at all either… but this article might be something worth reading.
