Damnit! Find me some good Indian food in Columbus, OH!

2008 June 19

I haven’t had any Indian food since moving to Columbus, and tonight I decided it was time to “pop my cherry” on this one.  I read a few reviews and decided on Indian Oven over on Main St, near Franklin University.

I hate to hate on a restaurant, but let’s just say that almost all of it is packed right back in the bag it came in and sitting in my trash can.  It was HORRIBLE!

I ordered my classic test out Indian cuisine entree…chicken curry, basmati rice, and a side of naan.  There were a few clues that should have let me know that this experience might not be quite so memorable:

  1. The place was really mod, with a cool bar and stuff
  2. No one was in there
  3. I could not smell Indian spices
  4. The lady at the counter was not Indian (not white either, but like Chinese or Korean)

So $15.95 later, I’m still hungry!!!  I ordered the curry mild just in case mild wasn’t so mild, and it was just bland.  The naan was so-so but you can’t mess up dough so much.  The basmati rice was nothing special.

Help me locals!!!  Where can I find some good Indian food in Columbus?  I don’t want a posh spot to hang out; I want that little hole in the wall find, you know?

I know it’s possible in the midwest because when I was in Kentucky for a while, I had some really great Indian food.

Go to the North Market and buy some Indian food there. I don’t know the name but it is directly next to the soda pop dispenser, across from the Sushi place and all of the cakes.

I love it! And I think I paid like $10 for a taste sampler where you get to pick two meats and three vegetable dishes and of course some naan. All of it was good eats!

Also try The Cuisine of India (the best!). They cater at Cardinal Health every Friday. http://www.cuisineofindiatogo.com/

Monday-Friday they have a lunch buffet.

    Delish!

Ok, there are a couple REALLY good places. First is Cuisine of India on Sancus Blvd. This is my #1 favorite and the staff is always very courteous. It’s by Polaris directly behind the city BBQ on Sancus. Next is the Bay Leaf, also really close to CoI but on Polaris PkWy itself. Probably a 7 out of 10 on quality and service, but for Columbus, that’s OK. Last is Sher E Punjab. It’s in the Kenny Center on Kenny Rd right off Henderson. Food is excellent, but service could be better. Those are about the best I have had in Columbus and I’m an Indian cuisine junkie.

The woman you mentioned might have been Indian. There are people from states in the north east who “look Chinese” but in fact they’re Indian. If you google “seven sisters states” you will see what I mean.
